Honest Cinema Score keeps what critics think and what audiences think apart, then shows the distance between them. A single blended score hides the most interesting part of a film's reception.

Questions

Why are press and audience scores kept separate?

Critics and audiences usually answer different questions. Critics judge craft, originality and ambition; audiences judge satisfaction. Blending them into one number hides disagreements, and disagreements are where the interesting films are. We show both, plus the gap.

Where do the scores come from?

Film details, budget and box office come from Wikidata, the open knowledge base, and plot summaries from Wikipedia. Wikidata sometimes holds review scores, each labelled with the year it dates from. Anything else you add yourself: each row has a button that opens the film's page on the review site so you can read the number and paste it in. You can optionally share manual entries with the community service. Community agreement is not independent verification.

How is the weighted score calculated?

Every source has an adjustable editorial weight, not a measured reliability percentage. Different samples and scales cannot be made identical by weighting. You can change every weight and watch the result update. The full list is in the methodology.

What counts as a big gap?

Fifteen points or more is noticeable, thirty or more is large. Gaps are normal in some genres, especially horror and comedy, so read them in context. More on genre and gaps.

Are the scores reliable for brand-new films?

Early scores move a lot, and some sources have no data yet in the first days. We tell you how many of the sources were found, and mark very new releases. Check again after a week or two.
